Where it came from
Warstorm Surge was originally printed in the Commander 2011 product line before its inclusion as card number 54 in the Planechase 2012 set. The card was designed as a potent enchantment for multiplayer Magic: The Gathering formats, intentionally crafted to synergize with strategies revolving around large creatures and repeatable battlefield entries. Its mechanic, which allows a player to deal damage to any target equal to the power of a creature entering the battlefield under their control, was intended to reward aggressive creature-heavy playstyles.
The artwork for this iteration was created by Kev Walker, a longtime contributor to the game known for his dynamic and impactful creature illustrations. Walker focused on conveying the chaotic, explosive energy inherent in the card's effect, using vibrant colors and a composition that suggests an overwhelming magical onslaught. Upon release, the card was well-received by the player community for its high-impact board presence, becoming a staple inclusion in decks focused on red mana and creature-focused damage output.
