What it does
Each player sacrifices all artifacts, enchantments, and nonbasic lands they control. For each land sacrificed this way, its controller may search their library for a basic land card and put it onto the battlefield tapped. Then each player who searched their library this way shuffles.

Where it came from
Wave of Vitriol was released in 2014 as part of the Commander 2014 set, a series of preconstructed decks specifically designed for the Magic: The Gathering Commander format. It was featured as a powerful green sorcery card in the 'Guided by Nature' deck, which focused on the synergy between elves and lands. The card was created to serve as a high-cost, high-impact board wipe, allowing players to destroy all artifacts, enchantments, and nonbasic lands in exchange for basic lands, reflecting the game's shift toward rewarding players for interacting with complex board states.
The card’s illustration was provided by artist James Zapata, whose work often leans into the dramatic and fantastical aesthetic typical of the Magic: The Gathering universe. Zapata aimed to capture the destructive and purging nature of the card's effect, utilizing earthy, intense tones to visualize the landscape-altering power of the spell. Upon its release, it was well-received by the Commander community for its ability to punish decks that rely heavily on nonbasic land strategies, becoming a staple utility card for green-aligned decks.
