Where it came from
Weathered Bodyguards was released in 2006 as part of the Time Spiral set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed as a love letter to the game's history, featuring numerous mechanical callbacks and 'timeshifted' reprints. This specific card was created to provide a defensive white creature that reflected the set's focus on complex combat interactions and creature-based utility.
The artwork for the card was illustrated by Greg Staples, who utilized a gritty, textured style to evoke the feeling of veteran soldiers hardened by conflict. His design captures the stoic and protective nature of the bodyguards, aligning with the card's defensive ability to redirect damage. Upon its release, the card was noted for its flavor and mechanical synergy within limited play environments, serving as a reliable backbone for white-aligned decks of that era.
