Where it came from
The Wheel of Potential was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 set for Magic: The Gathering. Designed specifically for the Modern format, this set sought to introduce powerful new cards into the ecosystem while paying homage to the game's long-standing history through complex, high-impact mechanics. The card reflects the set's focus on chaotic, high-variance gameplay by allowing players to exile their hands and draw new cards, with the potential for additional benefits if mana is spent during the process.
The artwork was illustrated by Justyna Dura, whose contribution captures the volatile, cosmic energy thematic to the set's red-aligned spells. Her design utilizes vibrant colors and swirling, abstract geometry to represent the unpredictability of the effect. Upon its release, the card drew significant attention from competitive players for its utility in red-heavy archetypes that rely on aggressive resource management and the ability to mitigate the risks associated with discarding one's own hand.
