Where it came from
The Whetstone card included in the World Championship Decks 2000 was a reproduction of a card originally featured in the Mercadian Masques expansion set for Magic: The Gathering. These deck sets were specifically designed to allow players to replicate the strategies used by top competitors at the 2000 Magic World Championship, featuring gold-bordered backs and facsimile signatures to distinguish them from standard tournament-legal cards.
The design of the card reflects the aesthetic of the Mercadian Masques era, characterized by a focus on mechanical utility and thematic consistency within the setting of the plane of Mercadia. While the original illustration provided the visual identity for the card, the World Championship printing serves as a historical record of the competitive meta-game from the turn of the millennium, intended for collectors and players interested in the evolution of professional deck construction.
