Where it came from
Whims of the Fates was released in 2016 as part of the Commander 2016 expansion, a set specifically designed for the multiplayer Commander format of Magic: The Gathering. The card was included in the 'Entropic Uprising' deck, which focused on chaos-themed gameplay mechanics. Its design reflects the chaotic nature of red-aligned magic, forcing players to randomize the distribution of their permanents to simulate the unpredictable hand of destiny.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a prolific artist known for his ethereal and atmospheric style. Voss sought to capture the high-stakes, erratic essence of the card’s effect through visual storytelling that emphasizes cosmic interference. Upon its release, the card garnered interest from players who enjoy 'chaos' archetypes, though its high mana cost and reliance on luck meant it was viewed primarily as a fun, table-altering tool rather than a competitive staple.
