Whitewater Naiads

Whitewater Naiads was released in 2014 as part of the Journey into Nyx set, the final expansion in the Theros block for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to explore the conclusion of a Greek mythology-inspired storyline, focusing on the encroaching influence of the pantheon of gods on the mortal world. As an enchantment creature, the Naiads were crafted to support the block's core 'constellation' mechanic, which rewarded players for playing multiple enchantments by triggering powerful secondary effects.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator William Wu, who depicted the creature with ethereal, fluid forms consistent with the mystical nature of Nyx, the starry night sky of the Theros plane. The design emphasizes the card's role as a blue-aligned utility creature, intended to facilitate offensive strategies by granting creatures evasion through the 'constellation' ability. It was received by the player community as a solid limited-format card, valued for its ability to push damage through in stalled board states.
