Where it came from
Wing Splicer was originally released in the New Phyrexia set in 2011 as part of a cycle of cards representing the Phyrexian-corrupted Artificers of Mirrodin. Designed to support a 'Golem tribal' archetype in the limited environment, the card reflects the aesthetic of the New Phyrexian faction, emphasizing the mechanical integration of biology and metal. The art, created by Igor Kieryluk, leans into the visceral, industrial body-horror themes that define the set's visual language.
The 2017 Modern Masters reprint brought the card back into the limelight to bolster the set's artifact-focused draft environment. By the time of this release, the Splicer cycle had gained a dedicated following among players who appreciated their utility in Commander and cube formats. The reprint maintained the original illustrative style, serving as a functional piece of synergy for players looking to construct golem-heavy decks in a high-power limited setting.
