Wooded Bastion

Wooded Bastion first appeared in the Shadowmoor expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2008, designed to provide players with a powerful utility land that offered flexible mana fixing. The card belongs to a cycle of hybrid mana lands introduced during the Lorwyn-Shadowmoor block, a period defined by the game's exploration of color-blending mechanics and tribal synergies. By allowing players to convert colorless mana into colored mana in specific color pairs, it became a staple in Commander and various Constructed formats, valued for its ability to smooth out mana bases without taxing the player's life total.

The artwork for Wooded Bastion, illustrated by Brandon Kitkouski, captures the eerie, twilight aesthetic of the Shadowmoor plane. Kitkouski utilized a muted, atmospheric palette to reflect the dark, twisted reflection of the Lorwyn world, emphasizing tangled flora and ancient, overgrown stonework. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player base for its functional utility, and its inclusion in the curated 'The List' for the Double Masters set served as a recognition of its enduring relevance and demand in the secondary market.
