Provenance

Where it came from

The Woodwraith Strangler was released in 2005 as part of the Ravnica: City of Guilds set, the inaugural entry in the Ravnica block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was notable for its heavy emphasis on gold-bordered multicolored cards and for its deep thematic focus on the sprawling, city-wide metropolis of Ravnica. The creature represents the Golgari Swarm, one of the ten guilds that vie for control over the city’s life and death cycles.

The card’s illustration was provided by artist Darrell Riche, who worked within the set’s established visual language of decay and urban grit. Riche’s design aimed to capture the essence of the Golgari, blending organic, fungal elements with aggressive, monstrous anatomy. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional addition to limited play environments, serving as a standard representative of the guild's focus on creature-based attrition and graveyard-adjacent mechanics.
