Where it came from
Words of Wind was released in October 2002 as part of the Onslaught expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the first set of the Onslaught block, it reintroduced the tribal theme to the game, focusing heavily on creature types like Goblins, Zombies, and Wizards. This specific card was designed as an enchantment that rewards players for drawing cards by forcing opponents to return permanents to their hands, a mechanic that highlights the set's emphasis on complex board states and tactical recursion.
The card's artwork was illustrated by the fantasy artist Greg Hildebrandt, one half of the famous Brothers Hildebrandt. Known for their work on The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, the Hildebrandts brought a distinct, painterly aesthetic to Magic: The Gathering during the early 2000s. Their depiction for Words of Wind captures a swirling, ethereal energy that reflects the card's disruptive effect on the game, and it remains a recognizable example of the vibrant, high-fantasy style that defined the Onslaught era.
