Where it came from
Worldly Tutor was originally released in the 1997 Mirage set, designed by Bill Rose to provide a specialized utility search effect for the green color identity. The card allows a player to search their library for any creature card and place it on top, a powerful mechanic that balances deck consistency with the restriction of revealing the card to opponents. Its inclusion in the Commander Collection: Green, released in 2020, was specifically intended to support the popular Commander format, which emphasizes deck-building themes and synergy.
The art featured in the Commander Collection: Green printing was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve. Known for her expressive and detailed character work, Villeneuve’s rendition updates the card's visual identity to reflect the naturalistic and strategic themes prevalent in modern Magic: The Gathering. This version of the card was received warmly by the player base, as it provided a highly functional staple with refreshed aesthetics for an audience centered around the social and strategic depth of multiplayer play.
