Where it came from
Wrexial, the Risen Deep was originally introduced in the 2010 Worldwake expansion, designed as a legendary Kraken horror creature that plays on the graveyard-manipulation themes common to blue and black color identities. The card is renowned for its ability to cast instant and sorcery spells from an opponent's graveyard, a design choice meant to represent the creature pulling sunken memories from the ocean depths. This specific version, numbered 359, is a reprint featured in the New Capenna Commander set, which utilizes the art style and visual language established during the card's debut.
The illustration for this card was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who captured the creature's menacing, tentacled form rising from murky waters. The visual direction emphasizes the Lovecraftian aesthetic inherent to the creature's type, focusing on atmospheric lighting and a sense of scale. Within the Magic: The Gathering community, the card is respected for its unique tactical utility in commander gameplay, where it serves as a powerful centerpiece for decks focused on theft and recursion.
