Where it came from
You Come to a River was released in July 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. This set marked the first full-scale crossover between the game and Dungeons & Dragons, aiming to translate the tabletop role-playing experience into card mechanics. The card itself is a modal spell that captures the common D&D scenario of encountering a water obstacle, requiring players to choose between bouncing a permanent or giving a creature reach.
The card features illustration by Wisnu Tan, who was tasked with visualizing the classic adventuring party dynamic. The design emphasizes the utility-focused nature of the set's 'choose one' spells, which were intended to mimic the agency and decision-making inherent in a D&D dungeon master's encounters. Upon release, the card was received as a functional, low-rarity common that saw play primarily in Limited formats for its versatility as a tempo-stabilizing tool.
