Where it came from
Zabaz, the Glimmerwasp was introduced in the 2021 set Modern Horizons 2, a product designed specifically for the Modern format of Magic: The Gathering. The card was created to provide a unique legendary creature centerpiece for artifact-heavy decks, specifically those utilizing the modular keyword. Its design leans into the thematic identity of the Boros color combination, focusing on aggressive board states and synergy with +1/+1 counters.
The illustration was provided by artist Campbell White, who depicted the creature as a mechanical, metallic insect buzzing with an inner glow. The design goal was to evoke a sense of frantic energy, matching the card's ability to sacrifice itself to empower other artifacts. Upon its release, the card gained popularity among players who enjoy complex engine-building strategies in the Commander format, where it is frequently played as a commander due to its modular utility.
