Where it came from
Zellix, Sanity Flayer was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to bring the atmosphere and characters of the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms setting into the multiplayer Commander format, allowing players to draft decks based on iconic tropes from the tabletop roleplaying game.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who rendered the mind flayer with an emphasis on its alien, bioluminescent aesthetic typical of D&D's illithids. Mechanically, the design leans into the 'horror' theme by rewarding the player for milling opponents' libraries, a strategic nod to the mind flayer's ability to consume and manipulate the intelligence of its victims.
