Where it came from
Zuberi, Golden Feather was released in October 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion set for Magic: The Gathering. As the first set in the Mirage block, it was designed to introduce a more cohesive mechanical identity and a distinct flavor inspired by African aesthetics, moving away from the high-fantasy European tropes of the game’s early years. This card, a rare white creature, exemplifies the set's focus on creatures with specific, utility-based abilities rather than raw power.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Heather Hudson, who was a frequent contributor to the game during the mid-nineties. Hudson’s work on Zuberi features her signature painterly style, capturing the character’s regal, avian-humanoid appearance with intricate gold detailing. Upon release, the card was received as a niche tribal support piece, valued more for its thematic role within the set's bird-themed strategies than for tournament-level competitive viability.
