60 Centimeter Woman

Published in the mid-1970s, 60 Centimeter Woman represents a quintessential example of Kamimura Kazuo’s distinct aesthetic during the golden age of gekiga. Emerging from a period where manga began to bridge the gap between popular entertainment and literary art, the work was designed to explore the nuances of urban alienation and the complex, often melancholy interior lives of his female protagonists. Kamimura drew heavily from his background in commercial design and traditional Japanese art, employing delicate, flowing linework and cinematic framing to evoke a sense of fleeting intimacy.

The series is celebrated for its evocative portrayal of 1970s Tokyo, serving as both a character study and a snapshot of a changing social landscape. Kamimura, often referred to as the painter of the Showa era, sought to capture the atmosphere of romantic ennui rather than traditional action-oriented plots. While his work was initially part of the niche adult manga market, it has since been reassessed by critics and historians as a significant contribution to the medium, lauded for its artistic elegance and its uncompromising focus on the psychological depth of its subjects.
