Where it came from
A Black Company's Employee Became a Cat, a Life-changing Story, authored by Shimizu Merii, emerged from the subgenre of Japanese web-manga that explores the harsh realities of corporate overwork through speculative or transformative themes. Originally serialized online, the series gained popularity for its relatable depiction of burnout, where a protagonist facing extreme workplace exploitation is suddenly transformed into a feline, thereby gaining a completely different perspective on their life and professional environment.
The manga is characterized by a blend of whimsical premise and sobering social commentary. Shimizu Merii utilizes the cat-based conceit to juxtapose the absurdity of the corporate lifestyle with the simple, immediate needs of the protagonist's new form. This approach resonated with readers who felt marginalized or exhausted by Japan's traditional work culture, allowing the artist to address themes of mental health and self-worth within a lighthearted, accessible visual style.
