Where it came from
A Deadly Secret, originally serialized as Lian Cheng Jue in the early 1960s, stands as one of the most somber and cynical entries in Jin Yong’s celebrated wuxia bibliography. Written during a period when the author was experimenting with darker themes, the novel serves as a pointed critique of human greed and the moral decay often hidden beneath the surface of the traditional martial arts world. Unlike his more sweeping historical epics, this work focuses intensely on the psychological torment of its protagonist, Di Yun, as he navigates a landscape of betrayal.
The narrative is notable for its departure from the romanticized tropes of the genre, opting instead for a gritty exploration of suffering and vengeance. Jin Yong’s writing style in this volume is deliberately stark, reflecting the cold, unforgiving nature of the characters he depicts. Critically, the work is frequently cited by scholars of Chinese literature for its masterful subversion of the hero's journey, leaving a lasting impact on the development of the wuxia novel as a vessel for social commentary.
