A Land Fit for Heroin?: Drug Policies, Prevention and Practice

Published in 1987, A Land Fit for Heroin? serves as a critical examination of British drug policies during a period of shifting social and legislative attitudes. Nicholas Dorn, working alongside a team of researchers, aimed to move beyond the alarmist rhetoric that often characterized public discourse on illicit substances. The work was produced in the context of the Institute for the Study of Drug Dependence, reflecting an academic and policy-oriented effort to bridge the gap between sociological research and the practical realities of prevention and harm reduction.

The design and content of the volume reflect the rigorous, analytical tone of late 1980s social policy texts. By documenting the failure of strictly punitive measures, Dorn provided a foundational critique that influenced subsequent debates on drug law reform in the United Kingdom. Upon its release, the volume was received as a significant contribution to the field, noted for its insistence on evidence-based practice and for challenging the efficacy of traditional prohibitionist approaches.
