Alain Delon in Zorro

Published in Japan during the mid-1970s, this volume serves as a manga adaptation of the 1975 film Zorro, which starred Alain Delon in the iconic titular role. The adaptation was handled by Jiro Kuwata, a prolific artist widely recognized for his work on the original 1960s Batman manga. Kuwata was commissioned to translate the swashbuckling aesthetic of the European production into the sequential art medium, bridging the gap between Western cinema and the Japanese comic market.

Kuwata’s approach to the material focused on dynamic action sequences and the dramatic flair characteristic of the Zorro mythos. By utilizing his signature clean lines and cinematic panel layouts, he successfully captured Delon’s likeness and the film's period-appropriate atmosphere. Upon release, the volume functioned both as a promotional tie-in for the film's Japanese theatrical run and as a standalone piece of adventure fiction, earning appreciation for its ability to retain the film's tone within the constraints of a digest-sized manga format.
