A Romany of the snows; being a continuation of the personal histories of "Pierre and his people."

A Romany of the Snows was published in 1896 as a sequel to Gilbert Parker's earlier collection, Pierre and His People. Set against the harsh, romanticized landscape of the Canadian North, the work reflects the Victorian fascination with frontier life and the complex cultural interactions between French-Canadian trappers, Indigenous populations, and British settlers. Parker, a Canadian-born novelist who later became a prominent British politician, utilized these stories to cement his reputation as a master of the imperial adventure genre during the late nineteenth century.

The volume features the return of the character Pierre, a shrewd and enigmatic guide who serves as the moral center of Parker’s wilderness narratives. The prose is characterized by the sentimental yet rugged tone typical of the era's popular fiction, aiming to transport urban readers into a world of rugged survival and dramatic character studies. Upon its release, the collection was well-received by contemporary critics for its atmospheric storytelling, contributing significantly to the popularization of the 'North' as a distinct literary setting in English-language fiction.
