Where it came from
Alexander's Book of Mystery was published in the early 20th century by Claude Alexander Conlin, better known simply as Alexander the Crystal Seer. A prominent stage mentalist and illusionist of the Vaudevillian era, Alexander produced this volume as a companion to his high-profile touring act. The book was designed to capitalize on the public's fascination with spiritualism, astrology, and New Thought philosophies that permeated popular culture during the 1910s and 1920s.
The content reflects Alexander’s unique synthesis of traditional stage craft and occult lore, blending practical instructions for fortune telling with psychological techniques meant to enhance a performer's perceived clairvoyance. While the book was intended for a lay audience interested in the mystical, it serves today as a significant artifact of early 20th-century entertainment history, showcasing how Alexander successfully marketed the 'mysterious' as a tangible commodity during the height of his career.
