Alexandrite

Alexandrite is the final installment of Narita Minako’s celebrated Cy*cie series, originally serialized in the manga magazine LaLa during the late 1980s. Emerging from the shojo manga tradition, the series explores themes of identity, social belonging, and personal evolution through the lens of a young man navigating the complexities of his heritage and his experiences within an elite American boarding school. It represents a significant era in the genre where narrative depth began to shift toward more introspective and globally conscious character studies.

Narita Minako is highly regarded for her fluid, elegant linework and her ability to anchor character drama in authentic cultural settings. In Alexandrite, her design choices reflect a meticulous attention to the aesthetic sensibilities of the era, balancing the polished, sophisticated look of private school life with the subtle emotional landscapes of her protagonists. Upon release, the series was well-received by readers who appreciated its departure from standard romance tropes, cementing its reputation as a thoughtful piece of character-driven contemporary literature.
