Allgemeine Encyklopädie der Wissenschaften und Künste: in alphabetischer Folge. Gymnesiae - Gyzels, und Nachträge: Gara - Gwalior : nebst Register über die I. Section, die Buchstaben A - G umfassend. Section 1, A - G ; Theil 99

The Allgemeine Encyklopädie der Wissenschaften und Künste, often referred to as the Ersch-Gruber after its initiators Johann Samuel Ersch and Johann Gottfried Gruber, was conceived in the early 19th century as an ambitious attempt to compile the totality of human knowledge. Published in Leipzig by F. A. Brockhaus starting in 1818, the project sought to surpass all existing reference works in depth, scale, and scholarly rigor. It became a monument to German academic tradition, characterized by exhaustive articles that functioned more like monographs than brief dictionary entries.

The 99th volume of the first section, covering entries from 'Gymnesiae' through 'Gwalior,' reflects the mid-to-late 19th-century effort to bring this massive editorial undertaking to a conclusion. The design and structure of the work were intended to provide a comprehensive cross-section of science, history, and the arts, though the sheer density of the information led to a protracted publication process that spanned decades. While it was widely respected as an unparalleled scholarly resource upon release, the encyclopedic project eventually stalled, remaining an incomplete yet essential artifact of 19th-century bibliographic history.
