Allgemeine Encyklopädie der Wissenschaften und Künste in alphabetischer Folge

The Allgemeine Encyklopädie der Wissenschaften und Künste, initiated in the early 19th century by Johann Samuel Ersch and Johann Gottfried Gruber, was conceived as an unprecedented scholarly endeavor. Aiming to surpass all previous reference works in depth and scope, the project sought to provide a comprehensive, systematic inventory of human knowledge organized in alphabetical order. It emerged from the intellectual fervor of the German Enlightenment, reflecting a period when scholars believed that the entirety of the world's wisdom could be codified and centralized into a singular, monumental publication.

The design and editorial philosophy were marked by extreme rigor, with contributors focusing on exhaustive detail rather than brevity. While the work is celebrated today for its profound historical significance and academic ambition, the project proved so vast that it became notorious for its slow pace, spanning over a century and never reaching completion. It stands as a testament to the Victorian-era obsession with total categorization, representing both a zenith of 19th-century academic aspiration and the practical limitations of such an encyclopedic vision.
