The Allgemeines Bücher-Lexikon, compiled by Wilhelm Heinsius, was first published in Leipzig between 1793 and 1798. Designed as a comprehensive bibliographic guide, its primary objective was to catalog the immense surge of German-language printed works published during the eighteenth century. By documenting titles, printing locations, publishers, and prices, the work served as a foundational reference tool for the burgeoning book trade, providing much-needed order to a rapidly expanding intellectual market.

Heinsius intended this lexicon to be a definitive resource for libraries and merchants across the German-speaking regions. His design focused on meticulous alphabetical organization, a format that was well-received by his contemporaries for its clarity and utility. The work became a cornerstone of nineteenth-century bibliography, establishing a rigorous methodology for the systematic recording of literature that influenced the development of national library catalogs throughout Europe.
