The Allgemeines Bücher-Lexikon serves as a foundational bibliographic reference for the German book trade during the 19th century. Initiated by Wilhelm Heinsius, the series was designed to provide a comprehensive, alphabetical record of all books published within Germany and linguistically related regions. Volume 17, part 1, specifically covers the years 1880 to 1884, organizing titles from A to K while incorporating essential bibliographic metadata such as printing locations, publishers, and retail pricing.

The project was emblematic of the rigorous archival standards established by German bibliographers of the era, aiming to create a singular, reliable index for librarians, booksellers, and scholars. By cataloging years of rapid industrial expansion in publishing, the series became an indispensable tool for tracking the literary output of the period. Its reception was consistently favorable among contemporary academic circles, who valued the work for its systematic approach to documenting the increasingly complex European market for printed media.
