Where it came from
The Annuaire officiel de l'armée française served as the primary administrative register for the French military, documenting the ranking, placement, and biographical status of commissioned officers within the armed forces. Published annually by the Ministère de la guerre, it functioned as an essential tool for institutional transparency and internal record-keeping, capturing the evolving structure of the military establishment during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The design of these volumes was intentionally utilitarian, prioritizing clarity and archival integrity over aesthetic flair to serve as a reliable reference for government officials and high-ranking command. While intended for professional administrative use, the volumes were widely consulted by researchers and historians for their comprehensive data on French military bureaucracy, providing a precise, grounded look at the organizational hierarchies of the period.
