Where it came from
The Vassar College Annual Catalogue, such as the volume spanning the 1916-1917 academic year, served as a vital administrative and promotional document for the institution. Published by the college during the early 20th century, these volumes were designed to provide prospective students, families, and educational authorities with a transparent overview of the curriculum, faculty qualifications, and the collegiate requirements necessary for a degree at the time.
The design of these catalogues reflects the formal academic standards of the era, typically featuring crisp, serif typography and a structured layout that prioritized clear communication of departmental offerings. While the catalogues were produced as internal administrative records, they were received as essential historical snapshots of the evolving liberal arts pedagogy at Vassar, meticulously documenting the college's intellectual rigor and campus life during a period of significant growth for women's higher education.
