Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio

Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio, known in English as Arpeggio of Blue Steel, began serialization in 2009 within the pages of Shonen Gahosha’s Young King Ours magazine. Created by the manga artist duo known as Ark Performance, the series emerged during a period of rising interest in anthropomorphized military hardware. The narrative centers on a post-apocalyptic world where a mysterious naval force known as the Fleet of Fog has rendered the oceans impassable, forcing the remnants of humanity to rely on experimental technology to reclaim the seas.

The visual identity of the series, particularly the intricate mechanical designs of the ships and their humanoid Mental Model avatars, was a collaborative effort by the team to blend high-concept science fiction with character-driven drama. The series received significant attention for its tactical naval combat depictions and the philosophical questions posed by the interaction between human crews and their ship-born artificial intelligences. Its success prompted a well-regarded 2013 television anime adaptation by Studio Sanzigen, which further cemented the franchise's standing in the modern military-themed manga genre.
