Where it came from
Ar tonelico II, known in Japan as Ar tonelico II: Sekai ni Hibiku Shoujo-tachi de Metafalica, was developed by Gust and released in 2007 for the PlayStation 2. As the second entry in the Ar tonelico role-playing game series, it serves as a narrative continuation of its predecessor, set in the world of Metafalica. The game is celebrated for its unique focus on Hymmnos, a constructed language central to both the lore and the game's music-based combat system.
The adaptation of the series into print media, such as the manga illustrated by Aya Megumu, reflects the multimedia strategy common to Japanese RPG franchises of the era. Aya Megumu’s work seeks to translate the complex, character-driven social dynamics and the intricate world-building of the games into a visual narrative format. The series has maintained a dedicated following among fans of niche Japanese role-playing games, recognized primarily for its synthesis of high fantasy, science fiction elements, and melodic themes.
