Archaeological Light on the Early Christianizing of Scotland: By G.A.F. Knight. In 2 Volumes With 3 Appendices, 5 Maps and 32 Illustrations on Art Paper

Published in 1933 by James Clarke & Co. in London, this two-volume work represents a significant effort by the Reverend G.A.F. Knight to synthesize physical archaeological findings with historical records of Scotland's early conversion to Christianity. The work emerged from the scholarly interest of the period in tracing the origins of the Celtic Church, moving beyond purely hagiographic accounts to examine structural remains, carved stones, and early ecclesiastical sites across the Scottish landscape.

Knight’s approach was characteristic of the interwar period's academic style, prioritizing the documentation of tangible remnants—such as chapels, burial grounds, and crosses—to ground religious history in geographical fact. By incorporating thirty-two illustrations on art paper and five maps, the volumes were designed as a definitive, accessible reference for both clergy and historical enthusiasts. Upon its release, it was regarded as a diligent, if dense, compilation of the regional data available to a scholar of the era, providing a foundational text for those studying the intersection of early medieval archaeology and religious transition.
