Where it came from
Area 88 was created by Kaoru Shintani and first serialized in Monthly Shonen Big Comic starting in 1979. Set against the backdrop of the Cold War, the series follows Shin Kazama, a Japanese pilot coerced into fighting as a mercenary in the air force of a fictional Middle Eastern kingdom. Shintani, who held a deep personal interest in aviation and military history, utilized the series to explore themes of moral ambiguity, the dehumanizing nature of combat, and the visceral intensity of aerial dogfighting.
The manga is renowned for its technical precision regarding aircraft, reflecting Shintani's meticulous research into the capabilities and aesthetics of modern jets. His design philosophy centered on blending high-stakes action with a somber, cynical perspective on the life of a pilot trapped by debt and contract. The series was highly influential, sparking a successful media franchise that included an original video animation (OVA) series, which is frequently cited for its high production quality and realistic depiction of military hardware.
