Where it came from
Area 51 is a manga series created by Japanese artist Hisa Masato, beginning its serialization in Monthly Comic Bunch in 2011. The work serves as a stylistic fusion of hard-boiled detective fiction and supernatural urban fantasy, drawing significant inspiration from American pop culture tropes regarding extraterrestrial lore and the legendary Nevada military facility.
Hisa Masato, known for his gritty, high-contrast visual style and cinematic panel layouts, designed the series to showcase an unconventional take on secret government sites. In this narrative, the facility serves as a refuge for creatures of folklore and myth rather than just aliens, a design choice that allowed the author to explore diverse mythological archetypes through the lens of a noir thriller.
