Association française pour l'avancement des sciences Compte rendu de la 5e session: Clermont-Ferrand 1876

The Association française pour l'avancement des sciences (AFAS) was established in 1872, inspired by the British Association for the Advancement of Science, to promote scientific research and public education during the early years of the French Third Republic. The 1876 session in Clermont-Ferrand followed the association's mission to hold annual meetings in different regional hubs, fostering collaboration between academics and local practitioners while documenting the state of scientific inquiry in France at the time.

This specific volume serves as the formal 'Compte rendu' or proceedings of the fifth session, compiling the lectures, committee reports, and research papers presented by delegates. These publications were designed to codify the advancements discussed during the meeting, ranging from geology and chemistry to sociology and mathematics. Such volumes were widely distributed to university libraries and scientific institutions, serving as essential archival records of the nineteenth-century intellectual movement to institutionalize scientific progress.
