Assemble Insert was originally released in the mid-1980s as a manga series by Yuuki Masami, serialised in the magazine Monthly Comic Noisy. The story serves as a satirical look at the burgeoning idol culture and the pop-culture tropes of the era, revolving around a young girl who becomes a superheroine managed by a shady talent agency. Yuuki, who later gained significant acclaim for his work on Patlabor, utilized the series to blend gentle parody with the character-driven humor that became a hallmark of his artistic style.

The transition of the work into other media, most notably a two-episode original video animation (OVA) produced in 1989, helped solidify its status as a cult classic.
