Where it came from
Avengers: Age of Ultron: Episode 0 was released in 2015 as a promotional manga one-shot in Japan to coincide with the theatrical debut of the Marvel Studios film. Created by mangaka Komiyama Yuusaku, the work was published in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine. The project served as a bridge between the existing Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity and the film, designed to introduce Japanese audiences to the stakes of the upcoming Avengers sequel through the familiar stylistic lens of shōnen manga.
The art style reflects Komiyama's signature dynamic action sequences, which were intended to translate the cinematic spectacle of the live-action blockbuster into a print format. By focusing on the Avengers' preparation for the conflict with Ultron, the one-shot functioned primarily as a marketing bridge to generate interest among Japanese comic readers. It was received as a novel curiosity, highlighting the frequent cross-pollination between American superhero franchises and the Japanese publishing industry during the height of the MCU's global expansion.
