Where it came from
Baku-chan is a poignant manga series created by the artist Masumura17, originally serialized online before being collected into physical volumes. The narrative centers on a young baku—a creature from Japanese folklore known for devouring nightmares—who unexpectedly finds itself in the human world. The work is notable for its gentle, melancholic exploration of loneliness and the ways in which individuals process their hidden anxieties through a whimsical, yet deeply empathetic, lens.
The character design of Baku-chan reflects Masumura17's signature minimalist aesthetic, utilizing soft lines and a restrained color palette to evoke a sense of quiet solitude. By focusing on the juxtaposition between the mythological nature of the protagonist and the mundane struggles of its human companions, the series invites readers to reflect on their own emotional burdens. Upon its release, the volume was well-received by fans of character-driven indie manga for its understated storytelling and consistent artistic vision.
