Bakudan! - Bakumatsu Danshi

Bakudan! - Bakumatsu Danshi is a historical comedy manga series written and illustrated by Atsushi Kase, serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine starting in the early 2010s. The narrative centers on a high school delinquent who finds himself transported back to the Bakumatsu period, the tumultuous final years of the Tokugawa shogunate. Kase utilized his signature energetic style, previously seen in works like Area 88, to blend anachronistic humor with the gravity of 19th-century Japanese political shifts.

The series explores the clash between modern sensibilities and the samurai era, positioning its protagonist as an unlikely participant in the shaping of the Meiji Restoration. Design-wise, the work prioritizes character-driven comedy over strict historical accuracy, a hallmark of Kase's approach to the genre. While the series did not reach the widespread international ubiquity of mainstream shonen titles, it remains a notable example of the time-slip subgenre within Japanese manga, appreciated for its kinetic art and lighthearted interpretation of significant historical figures.
