Banjou no Orion

Banjou no Orion, authored by Naoshi Arakawa, was serialized in Kodansha's Monthly Shonen Magazine beginning in 2018. This manga was crafted as a sophisticated sports drama centering on the world of professional shogi, blending the intense intellectual competition of the board game with the personal development and internal conflicts of its protagonist, a player struggling with the weight of expectations and his own artistic approach to the game.

Arakawa, widely recognized for his narrative depth in Your Lie in April, applied a similar focus on emotional resonance and meticulous character development to this project. The visual storytelling utilizes the static, grid-like nature of shogi to create dynamic tension, often juxtaposing the stillness of the match with the volatile psychological state of the competitors. Upon its release, the series was received as a grounded, introspective addition to the seinen demographic, praised for its technical research into the shogi world and the atmospheric quality of its illustrations.
