Basilisk: Kouga Ninpou-chou

Originally serialized in the early 1950s, Basilisk: Kouga Ninpou-chou—or The Kouga Ninja Scrolls—was written by Futaro Yamada as a foundational work of modern Japanese ninja fiction. Set during the early Edo period, the narrative reimagines a brutal conflict between the Iga and Kouga ninja clans, framed as a political proxy battle commissioned by the Tokugawa shogunate to decide the shogunal succession. Yamada's work is widely credited with shifting the portrayal of ninja in literature from historical curiosities to figures of dark, supernatural fantasy.

The enduring visual identity of the series was solidified through its adaptation into a highly acclaimed manga illustrated by Masaki Segawa, which began publication in 2003. Segawa’s adaptation is celebrated for its distinct, expressive character designs and dynamic choreography, which emphasize the tragic romanticism of the protagonists Gennosuke and Oboro. The manga's aesthetic, which blends traditional Japanese art sensibilities with visceral action, was instrumental in driving the franchise's global resurgence in the mid-2000s.
