Where it came from
Bibi Iris is a Korean manhwa series written and illustrated by Kim Kang-won, emerging during a period where South Korean comics were increasingly exploring gothic aesthetics and intricate character-driven narratives. The series, serialized in the early 2000s, follows a dark, atmospheric trajectory that reflects the author's precise line work and stylized approach to character design, which emphasizes emotional nuance through expressive, often melancholic, visual composition.
The design of the series centers on the juxtaposition of Victorian-inspired ornamentation and the grim, fantasy-laden themes prevalent in Korean fantasy manhwa of that era. Kim Kang-won utilized a distinct aesthetic that prioritized fluid movement and detailed costume design to anchor the narrative's supernatural elements. It was received as a notable entry in the fantasy genre, appreciated by readers for its consistent artistic quality and its commitment to a cohesive, moody visual language that defined much of the author's work during this stage of their career.
