Where it came from
The Queen's Knight, created by the South Korean manhwa artist Kim Kang-won, debuted in the late 1990s during a period when Korean comics were beginning to find a significant international audience. The series blends elements of the portal fantasy genre with historical romance, centering on a young girl named Yuna who is transported to a parallel world and protected by a mysterious knight. Its narrative reflects the influence of high-fantasy aesthetics prevalent in late-90s manhwa, emphasizing intricate character designs and emotionally charged storytelling.
Kim Kang-won's illustration style in this series is noted for its dramatic use of space and flowing line work, which helped to define the visual language of shoujo-style manhwa of that era. By focusing on the interplay between the mundane reality of the protagonist and the epic, often tragic struggles of the fantasy realm, the work resonated with readers looking for sweeping, character-driven sagas. The series remains a representative example of the aesthetic and thematic shifts that characterized the growth of the Korean comics industry as it expanded its reach toward global readers.
