Black Lagoon

Black Lagoon was created by manga artist Rei Hiroe and began serialization in Shogakukan's Monthly Sunday Gene-X magazine in 2002. The series emerged during a period of rising interest in seinen manga that drew heavy aesthetic and thematic inspiration from Western action cinema, particularly 1980s and 90s gritty crime thrillers. Set in the fictional city of Roanapur, Thailand, the narrative follows a Japanese salaryman who falls in with a mercenary group known as the Lagoon Company, exploring complex questions of morality, trauma, and geopolitical instability in Southeast Asia.

Hiroe’s design approach is characterized by high-octane, stylized violence and character-driven noir storytelling. He intentionally blended archetypal action tropes with philosophical dialogues, crafting a visual language defined by detailed weaponry, nautical logistics, and sharp, expressive character designs. Upon its release, the series received significant critical acclaim for its mature tone and technical mastery of kinetic paneling, cementing its status as a defining work of the seinen action genre.
