Black Lagoon (Fan Colored)

Black Lagoon, originally written and illustrated by Rei Hiroe, began serialization in Monthly Sunday Gene-X in 2002. Set in the lawless fictional city of Roanapur, Thailand, the series chronicles the adventures of a mercenary group known as the Lagoon Company. The narrative is defined by its gritty, hard-boiled tone, heavily influenced by Western action cinema and explorations of moral ambiguity, which set it apart from typical contemporary seinen manga at the time of its release.

The fan-colored editions of Black Lagoon represent a collaborative effort by the series' dedicated online fanbase to reinterpret Hiroe’s high-contrast, black-and-white ink work through a digital lens. While Hiroe’s original art utilizes dense shading and stark shadows to establish the series' dangerous atmosphere, these fan projects focus on applying palettes that emphasize the humid, tropical, and industrial aesthetics of the Southeast Asian setting. These projects are strictly grassroots and maintain a cult status as a tribute to the visual impact of Hiroe’s detailed character designs and weaponry.
