Boku-tachi wa Minna Otona ni Narenakatta

Originally released in 2017, this autobiographical novel by the television writer Moegara chronicles the melancholic transition from youth to adulthood against the backdrop of 1990s Tokyo. The narrative centers on a protagonist who grapples with the lingering memories of a past love and the disillusionment of his professional life, capturing the specific cultural zeitgeist of the era through references to music, technology, and social changes.

The book gained significant traction through social media and word-of-mouth, eventually becoming a literary sensation that resonated with readers who came of age during Japan's lost decade. Its success led to a film adaptation in 2021, and while the novel is noted for its raw, conversational prose, it remains a defining work for Moegara, who transitioned from working as a prop manager to becoming a celebrated voice in contemporary Japanese literature.
