Boku to Otouto no Halal Gohan

Boku to Otouto no Halal Gohan, or My Brother and I's Halal Meals, is a poignant slice-of-life manga series written and illustrated by Yamamoto Misuji. The work emerged from a contemporary shift in Japanese manga to explore multiculturalism and the nuances of religious observance within the domestic sphere. The narrative centers on the everyday experiences of a Japanese family navigating the transition to a Halal diet, serving as both a culinary guide and a social commentary on cross-cultural understanding in modern Japan.

The series is noted for its gentle, empathetic approach to its subject matter, prioritizing character development and the emotional significance of shared meals over complex plotting. Yamamoto Misuji employs a clean, approachable art style that emphasizes the warmth of home cooking, aiming to demystify Islamic dietary practices for a general Japanese readership. It was received as a sensitive and informative contribution to the 'gourmet manga' subgenre, valued for its ability to foster dialogue regarding diversity and inclusion in an accessible format.
