Where it came from
Boku to Shippo to Kagurazaka, written and illustrated by Michi Tarasawa, was originally serialized in the manga magazine Office You beginning in 2012. The story follows a young veterinarian named Koenji Tatsuya who leaves his job at a large clinic to return to Kagurazaka, a historic district in Tokyo, to take over a small veterinary practice. The narrative centers on the intimate, often poignant interactions between the veterinarian, the local community, and the various animals brought to his clinic.
Tarasawa’s approach to the series is grounded in a gentle, slice-of-life aesthetic that highlights the emotional bond between pets and their owners. The manga was well-received for its heartwarming tone and its sensitive portrayal of life in the aging Kagurazaka neighborhood, eventually leading to a successful live-action television adaptation in 2018. The design and character work reflect a clean, character-focused style intended to evoke empathy and underscore the quiet, everyday dignity of the protagonists.
